Abstract
Substation is the most important element in the electrical power system network. The continuity and reliability of power systems depend on the sound operation of substation. Safety of humans and stability of equipment in the substation are guaranteed by a carefully designed grounding system. The grounding system designed depends on many aspects like geometrical design of the area, soil resistivity, choice of number and material of conductors and ground rods, etc. In this context, the complexity of the geometrical analysis for grounding grid designing is an important feature that may cause errors in the calculation. This paper deals with the simplification of length calculations for calculating the step and touch potentials for the selected grid dimensions, depending on the geometry of the network formed by conductors and rods. This mathematical analysis simplifies the design and thus, in a way, contributes to ensuring the safe limits of the potential developed in the substation, such that human and equipment limits are way inside the limits.
