Abstract:

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by a variety of mental and physical problems that slow developmental stages in all regions. In this work we develop the clinical profile with the common characteristics of children with Down syndrome, as well as the process of diagnosing the syndrome. Then become a reference in the development and progress inhibitory factors from newborn to adulthood. It also presents the aims and the teaching principles in the education of children with the syndrome, with particular emphasis on language education and educational interventions that can facilitate their effective inclusion in the ordinary school. Finally, this paper discusses issues related to the families of children with Down syndrome, the first contact of the family with the syndrome, the feelings experienced by parents, and the role of special education practitioners in cooperation with families.
