Abstract
The paper presents a study on the fuel consumption of passenger cars using a combination of simulation and experimentation. The study used MATLAB/Simulink software to simulate the fuel consumption of gasoline-powered sedan cars under three operating conditions: urban, highway and mixed. The simulation results show that the corresponding fuel consumption is 6.86 L/100 km under urban conditions, 5.21 L/100 km under highways, and 6.00 L/100 km under mixed conditions. Road experiments were conducted over five driving cycles with a total distance of 169.3 km; from the measured fuel consumption, the average fuel consumption of the converted vehicle is about 5.78 L/100 km. The experimental results also show that fuel consumption gradually increases from highway, steep, suburban, mixed to urban road conditions, with the urban driving cycle showing the highest fuel consumption. Comparisons between simulations and experiments show that fuel consumption is consistent, with a difference between the mixed simulation value and the average experimental value of 3.68%. The research results confirm that the method of combining simulation and experiment in evaluating and forecasting the fuel consumption of cars under actual operating conditions is appropriate and reliable.
