Abstract
Eutectoid steel is widely used in structural and tooling applications. Its performance strongly depends on the microstructural changes produced during annealing. Although full, process, and spheroidizing annealing are known techniques, their efficiency and limitations are not systematically compared in the existing literature. This review examines these processes with respect to carbide morphology, pearlite transformation, and mechanical property development. Full, process and spheroidization annealing treatments increase ductility and reduce hardness. In contrast, in conventional annealing, the process is slow and energy-intensive, and non-uniform carbide microstructures are also observed. These are some of the major barriers to high-volume production of these materials in industries. The recent developments in these materials are also reviewed in this paper. Examples include rapid isothermal annealing, cyclic heat treatment, annealing furnace strategies, and microalloying strategies; machine-learning-assisted process control is also used. These techniques ensure higher stability of carbides, reduce the time for treatment, and improve machinability. The present review presents a clear comparison of annealing routes, identifies the gaps between industry and science, and provides guidelines toward future improvement. It points out a roadmap toward faster, energy-efficient, and application-specific annealing strategies for eutectoid steel.
